On 18 April 2007, Ajax decided to retire the number 14 shirt in honour of their greatest ever player Johan Cruyff.
It was for good reason too as he was not only Ajax’s greatest but also one of the world’s greatest of all time. Amassing over 200 goals for the Amsterdam giant as well as taking them to 3 successive European Cup triumphs in the 1970s, Cruyff first showcased his talent to the world in the famous colours of red and white.
In a career that featured highs for other clubs such as FC Barcelona as well as the Dutch national team it will always be Ajax that kicked things off for Cruyff. He scored incredible goals, provided amazing assists and was the ultimate player for master tactician Rinus Michels to showcase his modern ‘Totaalvoetbal’ system.
